This past weekend I had the opportunity to escape from the valley and go hide in a much smaller isolated valley. Some friends had invided us to chill with them at their families cabin up Parley’s canyon. It was so strange because we were able to leave so much of the noise that is part of living in the city for just crickets.

An inescapable constant thought was “it is insanely peaceful”. It was a powerful and profound place to be because of that. I think the only other place that I’ve experienced that type of quiet was inside of the temple. A big thank you for letting us escape from the city and be able to effectively go off grid for a weekend. It’s insane how nice that actually is.
Durring this getaway I also did something I haven’t been able to in years. A Pathfinder Game was ran. It has been an itch to do something like this for ages. Preparing for this was something of a mental challenge. Game prep came easy and is old hand, like riding a bike, the larger hurdle though is dealing with Mental Health while Running and also Playing.
Recently Fear the Boot (an RPG podcast) has a 2 part series about Mental Health how it affects both running and playing. I’d encourage you to check out both Part 1 and Part 2 as it’s an excellent open discussion on social anxiety and how to handle it. For my part dealing with Depression episodes and is debilitating for me at points. Good news though is that each episode that is lived through is becoming more and more manageable without medication. A just in case plan would be smart to implement though.
The session was a theater of the mind setup this round. My players actually were able to put together the clues I had presented for them pretty readily. Additionally it’s interesting that two of three of them didn’t really put together that we are restarting the same arc that we had attempted a few years ago. This go seems to have started better than I had hoped with them putting out a fire, investigating a death, and hunting the equivelant of a very annoying raccoon. They did well and My personal hope is that I can be able to balance my life to include this style of story telling going forward. It’s of great value to me.
